Just mention Goh Huat Seng Restaurant and usually one word come to mind… Steamboat! Having been around for more than 50 years, it is one of the oldest Teochew restaurants in Penang. Situated in the folds of Kimberley Street, many things have changed since the old days but one thing’s for sure… the traditional steamboat still comes lighted up with charcoal.
Their steamboat comes with a variety of dishes, freshly cut and served. For those who may be new to this restaurant, you could choose to take the readily available packaged steamboat meals priced from RM50, RM60 or RM70. Furthermore, feel free to top up with any extra dishes of your choice. One particular favorite that I enjoy topping up time and time again is the Deep Fried Fish Belly....
I having sore throat for quite sometimes. Before go to movie “The Murderer”, need to having something which is more “light” but end up we having steamboat together and we hope that the hot soup will kill the virus. . Overall quite satisfy with the fish head soup which lighted up with the charcoal. The waiting times to been served will be a bit longer since this is a traditional steamboat using charcoal. Need more times for the soup to be “ready”.
I visit here with my another friend, so the minimum order will be RM 40 for two person. Since we are quite old already and we can’t eat much. The portion was just enough for two person. Compare to those RM 18 ++ buffet style, the fish soup are more tasty...
Mum and dad used to bring me to dine in this Chinese Restaurant, Goh Huat Seng. It was our favorite place for dinner after shopping in the town. After so many years, it's my turn to bring my parents back to this old place for some savory dishes.
This time, I also brought along my nephew Jimmy for the makan trip. The following dishes are either his favorite or my parents favorite. Of course, hubby & I love it too. :) We are not picky eaters. :P
My dad and nephew chose to have "lor ark". The quarter duck together with intestines is very delicious. The sauce was not salty, just nice...
On the first night of our 2-nite 3-day stay in Penang, we had Teowchew steamboat at Goh Huat Seng Restaurant @ Kimberly Street. What’s special about their steamboat is that the steamboat is heated by charcoal, something which is quite rare in this day and age where everything is run by electric. Goh Huat Seng is a coffee shop encased in a white washed building on two shop lots. This classic Chinese restaurant personifies everything associated with downtown Chinese restaurants: witty and sarcastic ah-mahs wait on tables and boisterous Chinese families dine with rowdy grandkids in tow. Steaming fuss-free teochew steamboat and dim sum are served in traditional style. There are no menus and asking the server what’s good signifies an insult to the cook (all dishes being good, logically). Best option is to go with what you see on the table next to you...
My favourite seafood would be their fresh prawn and fish meat. After put them in the soup , the soup will become so much more delicious. I call it soup of heaven!...
