This spot is always crowded whether it is a weekday or a weekend. When we were there last week, we shared a small table with two friendly aunties who are in their forties at least. They told us Toh Soon Cafe has been around for more than 30 years. Both of them live nearby and they saw and knew about this place since they were very young. "Now, it is run by the new generation", they claimed. What they love the most is his black coffee or what the Penangites called it 'Kopi 'O'' ('Kopi' means coffee in Malay Language and 'O' is a coffee shop slang for coffee with sugar and no milk). "The black coffee here is exceptionally good in term of aroma and taste", they continued.
We ordered two cups of 'Kopi 'O'' and I could not agree more...
It is a known fact that Penang has lots of mouth watering attraction (food, of course!) available anywhere throughout the island and the mainland. Better still, these attractions are considered special and unique due to their originality and authenticity. These Penang Food have been around for ages and the businesses passed down from one generation to the other.
PenangTuaPui being the host, had taken our guest to enjoy a truly nostalgic and authentic Penang dish before the actual lunch at nearby Nasi Kandar shop. It easy to miss this place especially for first timers because of the building in front (Zelin Store) that actually blocks part of the view. You probably need to stand in front to know if the shop is operating or not...
I happened to discover a new place for good roti bakar recently. It was purely by chance. A few weeks back, I had to chaffeur my wife to look for locally designed T-shirts around Georgetown for her nieces and nephews. We stopped by at one of the shops at the entrance of Campbell Street which sold quite a variety of clothes. While waiting impatiently for her to select the designs of her choice, I noticed that not far from where I was, there was a crowd building up along one of the side lane. Upon closer inspection on what I thought was a dodgy alley, there's actually a shop inside the lane selling roti bakar. Its called Toh Soon Cafe.
From one glance, this place looks anything but dodgy...
What comes up to your mind when you think about breakfast? Ham and eggs? Noodles? For me, it's toasted bread! Well, on that particular morning, that is. Saucer came to visit in Penang, and we met up with his ex-colleague Wailian, who's a true blue Penangite. He always has a long list of famous eateries that he would recommend to us. So on that morning, I asked him about the famous charcoal-toasted bread in Campbell Street and he immediately said he knew where!
Needless to say, I gleefully sat patiently at the back of his car while he maneuvered through the busy streets of Georgetown. It's amazing how many people were up and doing marketing at 8.30am on a Saturday! It was a lucky day for us as we were able to...
How embarrassing! I have been back in Australia for a month and I still haven’t finished telling you all about my holiday. My laziness is especially bad as this breakfast that I am about to tell you about was a revelation.
We had been in Penang for a few days and were dealing with that age old no-plan travelling dilemma: should we stay here in this town that we like and eat some more, or do we leave early to spend more time at our next destination, but we don’t know if we will enjoy it as much. So many unknowns! We took a chance and booked bus tickets so we would have 3 days in Malacca...
